What is Bladder Botox?

Bladder Botox, also known as Intravesical Botox, is a procedure to inject the muscle relaxant botulinum toxin (Botox) into the bladder wall.

It is performed by passing a telescope through the urethra (the waterpipe) into the bladder, known as a cystoscopy.

Why is Bladder Botox required?

Botulinum toxin (Botox) is a muscle relaxant which works by temporarily reducing the ability of the bladder wall muscles to contract (squeeze).

Bladder Botox is most commonly used to treat urinary symptoms due to Overactive Bladder (OAB), including:

Urinary frequency

Waking at night to pass urine

Urinary urgency

Urinary incontinence

What does Bladder Botox involve?

Bladder Botox involves passing a telescope (cystoscope) through the urethra into the bladder.

Once the cystoscope is in the bladder, the bladder wall is injected in multiple places with botulinum toxin.

Bladder Botox can be performed with general anaesthetic, spinal anaesthetic (numb from the waist down), or local anaesthetic (numbing gel).

 

 

What is the recovery after Bladder Botox?

Bladder Botox is usually performed as day surgery – you can go home on the day of the procedure.

You can usually return most normal activities, including work, one to two days after Bladder Botox.

You may notice blood in the urine and mild burning when passing urine for a day or two after the procedure.

How effective is Bladder Botox?

60 to 80% of people who have Bladder Botox for overactive bladder will have significant reduction in the symptoms of urinary frequency, urgency, and incontinence.

Bladder Botox takes one to two weeks to become maximally effective.

Bladder Botox will wear off over a period of 6 to 12 months. It can be repeated if it was effective.
