ABOUT URODYNAMICS

What is urodynamics?

Urodynamics is a procedure to study bladder function.

It is performed by measuring the pressure in the bladder during filling and emptying, as well as how quickly and completely the bladder empties.

Why is urodynamics required?

Urodynamics is performed to investigate bladder problems.

It is often used in the assessment of urinary incontinence, especially if surgical treatment is being considered.

Urinary incontinence

Urinary incontinence is the lack of voluntary control over urination.

What does urodynamics involve?

Urodynamics involves passing a small catheter through the urethra (the waterpipe) into the bladder.

The catheter is used to fill the bladder. You are then asked to pass urine into a specialised toilet which measures the rate of urine flow. The pressure in the bladder is measured while the bladder is filling and emptying.

Urodynamics is performed while you are awake with a numbing anaesthetic gel in the urethra.

A cystoscopy is commonly performed at the same time as urodynamics.

What is the recovery after urodynamics?

Urodynamics is performed as an outpatient procedure – you can go home on the same day.

You can usually return most normal activities, including work, the day after the procedure.

You may notice blood in the urine and mild burning when passing urine for a day or two after urodynamics.

After urodynamics, your urologist will make an appointment to discus the test results and the ongoing management of your bladder issues.
