What is a male continence sling?

A male continence sling is a synthetic mesh which is surgically implanted for the management of urinary incontinence in men.

The sling elevates and compresses the urethra (waterpipe) to provide extra support and resistance during activities that increase abdominal pressure, like coughing, sneezing, or lifting.

There are several different types of slings available, including AdVance, Argus, and ATOMS slings.

Why is a male continence sling required?

A male continence sling is used to treat stress urinary incontinence in men.

The most common cause for stress urinary incontinence in men is prostate surgery, such as a radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer.

A male continence sling can be used to treat mild to moderate incontinence.

A sling is permanently implanted, has no external components, and does not require manual activation.

What does male continence sling surgery involve?

Male continence sling surgery involves implantating a synthetic (mesh) sling under the urethra via an incision in the perineum (the skin between the scrotum and the anus).

The procedure is performed under a general anaesthetic.

 

What is the recovery after male continence sling surgery?

Male continence sling surgery usually requires a one to two night stay in hospital.

You will usually have mild swelling and bruising in your scrotum and perineum for a few weeks after the surgery.

You can usually return to normal activities, including work and driving, about two weeks after the procedure, but you need to limit physical activity for 6 weeks after the procedure.
