Penile Prosthesis Preoperative Information

Please read the following information prior to your operation:

Prior to surgery

If you are a diabetic, please ensure you have good control of your blood sugar levels leading up to and following surgery.

At least 2 weeks prior

• Read the “Medications prior to surgery” information sheet.  If you require further guidance regarding your medications, please call the nursing staff at Brisbane Urology Clinic.
• Notify nursing staff if you have any concerns regarding your skin integrity in the genital area or groin.

1 week prior

• No manscaping ie waxing or shaving in the groin area. This is to protect the skin and reduce the risk of infection.
• Complete pre-operative tests.
• Purchase Chlorhexidine 2% wash from a pharmacy.
• Ensure all paperwork, admission forms and pre-payment have been attended to.

Night prior

• Shower using the Chlorhexidine 2% wash.
• Check fasting time.
• Shortening of scrotal hairs is best done close to surgery. If you do not have time on the day of surgery, shortening of hairs can be done the evening off prior to your first chlorhexidine wash.

Morning of surgery (prior to going to hospital)

• Trim the hairs in the pubic and upper thigh region using hair clippers without a comb (See area diagram).  Do not wax or use a razor/blade. Shortening of scrotal hairs is best done close to surgery. If you do not have time on the day of surgery, shortening of the hairs can be done the evening before, prior to your first chlorhexidine wash.

• After you have completed shortening the hairs, prior to going to hospital, have a second shower using the Chlorhexidine 2% wash.
• Do not apply any creams or powders to the area.

• You will generally be in hospital for 1 to 2 nights.
• Following surgery, you will need to wear a combine in your underwear and a jock strap over your underwear for 4 days. After 4 days you remove the combine and jock strap. Continue to wear supportive underwear or even two pairs to assist with the reduction of swelling.
• Ice the area with a cold pack to reduce bruising.
• When discharged from hospital your prosthesis will be left partially inflated. Almost a full erection. Position the erection pointing up towards your belly button.  This helps it heal in a straight position. It will remain partial inflated until your post op appointment with the nursing staff.
• You will be sore for a few weeks. Rest, ice and supportive underwear will help aid your recovery.
• Do not apply any creams or powders to the area until the incision has healed.
